How to avoid scams when sourcing cosmetic glass packaging from China manufacturers?
Reddit's r/Entrepreneur has a recurring nightmare thread: 'Sent $4,000 deposit to a Chinese packaging supplier. Now they're not replying. What do I do?' The answer is usually 'nothing you can do,' which is why prevention matters more than recovery.
Start with the factory tour — live video call, not recorded video. A legitimate manufacturer with their own forming lines will walk you through the production floor on a smartphone within 24 hours of your request. They'll show you running IS machines, decoration stations, QC benches. A trading company that's never set foot in a factory will make excuses: 'the factory is closed today,' 'our camera isn't working.' Red flag.
Request a specimen sample — not a pre-made demo, but a sample made to your specifications. Ask for a specific bottle size with a specific decoration (e.g. '30ml frosted blue dropper with matte black collar, silk-screened logo'). A real manufacturer can produce this in 5-7 days. A middleman needs 2-3 weeks because they're forwarding your request to an actual factory.
Check certifications against public databases. ISO 9001 certificates have a unique registration number you can verify at the issuing body's website. SGS audit reports show the factory address, scope, and validity period. Any supplier who hesitates to share cert numbers or shows you a blurry photo of a certificate instead of the document itself is almost certainly not certified.

A supplier demanding 50-100% upfront before production is either cash-strapped (risky) or planning to ghost you (worse). Use Trade Assurance or letters of credit for first orders — they cost 3-5% in fees but eliminate the 'disappeared with my deposit' risk.
Finally, check community reputation. Search the supplier's name plus 'scam' or 'review' in English, and their Chinese company name on Baidu. A clean recor...
